GAZA — Six civilians were killed and others were injured on Monday in an Israeli airstrike that targeted a house in the town of Jabalia in the northern war-torn Gaza Strip.
Medical sources reported that six civilians, including a woman and two children, were killed and several others were injured after the occupation shelled a house near the center of Jabalia in the northern Gaza Strip.
The death toll in the Gaza Strip has risen to 40,988, most of them children and women, since the Israeli occupation began its aggression on October 7, 2023. At least 94,825 have been wounded.
Thousands of victims remain missing; either buried under the rubble or scattered on the roads, as rescue teams face tremendous difficulties in reaching them due to the continued Israeli attacks and the massive amount of debris.
JAYAPURA — A plane with 48 people aboard skidded off the runway in Indonesia’s remote eastern region of Papua on Monday, police said, injuring several passengers.
The Southeast Asian archipelago has a poor aviation safety record, and Papua is covered in mountainous terrain where flying is hampered by frequent poor weather.
The ATR-42 aircraft belonging to Trigana Air was taking off from an airport in the remote Yapen Islands regency to Papuan capital Jayapura on Monday morning when it skidded off the runway.
The flight was carrying 42 passengers, including a baby, and six crew.
“Praise God everybody survived and has been taken to a hospital for a health checkup,” local police chief Ardyan Ukie Hercahyo said in a statement.
“We are investigating the incident and coordinating with related parties to ensure this will never happen again.”
The local search and rescue agency said in a statement that some passengers were injured and traumatized by the incident.
Indonesia relies heavily on air transport to connect its thousands of islands, but Papua is a particularly difficult area to reach.
In 2015, a Trigana Air plane crashed there, killing all 54 people on board.

LAGOS — A fuel tanker exploded after colliding with a truck carrying passengers and cattle in northern Nigeria’s Niger State killing at least 52 people, a rescue agency said on Monday.
Photographs released by the Niger State Emergency Management Agency or SEMA showed workers burying more than a dozen blackened and charred bodies of victims from Sunday’s early morning incident.
Images showed burned-out shells of the vehicles, one still billowing with smoke and flames after the incident in Niger’s Agaie local government district.
Ibrahim Husseini, spokesman for the Niger SEMA, told AFP the victims were given a mass burial following the accident and explosion.
“The incident occurred when a petrol tanker loaded with PMS (fuel) collided with a trailer truck loaded with travelers and cattle,” a SEMA statement said.
Two other vehicles, a crane and a pickup van, were also involved, it added.
Niger State Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago expressed sadness over the “colossal” loss, urging local residents to remain calm.
More than 50 cattle were also burnt alive.
Fuel tanker explosions are common in Africa’s most populous nation, where roads can be poorly maintained, and residents often look to siphon off fuel following accidents.
According to the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC), more than 5,000 people died in road accidents in Nigeria in 2023, compared to nearly 6,500 the previous year.
But according to the World Health Organization, the figures do not take into account accidents not reported to the authorities.
It estimates annual road accident deaths in Nigeria to be nearly 40,000, in a report published last year.
Deadly fires and explosions also happen in the fuel and oil infrastructure in Nigeria, one of the continent’s largest crude producers where petroleum theft is a major issue.
Two years ago, around 110 people died when an illegal oil refinery exploded in the south of the country.
Nigeria recently has faced serious fuel shortages after the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Ltd. (NNPCL) said it was struggling with debts to suppliers.
A sudden increase in fuel prices by NNPCL last week has added to the financial burden for Nigerians already coping with a cost-of-living crisis.
Palestinians pray by the body of slain Turkish-American International Solidarity Movement activist Aysenur Ezgi Eygi during a funeral procession in Nablus in the occupied West Bank on September 9, 2024. (AFP)
NABLUS — Hundreds of mourners gathered Monday in Nablus, in the occupied West Bank, to pay respects to a US-Turkish activist killed while protesting against Israeli settlements in a nearby town.
The body of the slain 26-year-old, Aysenur Ezgi Eygi, was wrapped in a Palestinian flag, with her head covered by a keffiyeh, a traditional scarf symbolising the Palestinian struggle against Israel.
Palestinian security forces carried her body through the streets of Nablus, accompanied by the sound of Palestinian bagpipes, before a wreath was placed over her remains.
The memorial, which began at Nablus’s Rafidia hospital, drew large crowds.
The UN rights office said Israeli forces killed Eygi with a “shot in the head.”
The mayor of Beita and the Palestinian news agency Wafa also reported that she was killed by Israeli soldiers.
The Israeli army acknowledged it had opened fire in the Beita area and said it was “looking into reports that a foreign national was killed as a result of shots fired.”
The United Nations said Eygi had been taking part in a “peaceful anti-settlement protest” in Beita, scene of weekly demonstrations.
Turkiye condemned her death, while the United States called it “tragic” and pressed its ally Israel to investigate.
The commemoration was postponed from Sunday, due to a dispute between the United States and Turkiye over “details such as the burial location and the route her body would take,” said Mahmud Al-Aloul, a senior Fatah official.
Aloul said that “Palestine would be honored for the martyr to be buried here.”
Since Hamas’s October 7 attack on Israel which triggered the war in Gaza, Israeli troops or settlers have killed more than 662 Palestinians in the West Bank, according to the Palestinian health ministry. At least 23 Israelis, including security forces, have been killed in Palestinian attacks during the same period, according to Israeli officials.
Israeli settlements in the West Bank, where about 490,000 people live, are illegal under international law.

DUBAI/CAIRO — At least 31 people have been killed and 100 wounded since the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces renewed an assault on the city of Sennar in southeastern Sudan on Sunday, a legal activist group said.
Several parts of the city including the main market have been targeted by RSF artillery fire, said Emergency Lawyers, which has monitored civilian deaths and other humanitarian violations.
The progress of the RSF, which already controls most of Sennar and at least half of the country, has slowed in the southeast as heavy rains have made movement difficult.
Its war with Sudan’s army has created the world’s largest hunger and internal displacement crises, killing tens of thousands of civilians and destroying most of Sudan’s infrastructure and economy.
Emergency Lawyers said the army had killed at least four people in Al-Souki, a town near Sennar, during airstrikes. The RSF killed one person and wounded 17 in artillery strikes on el-Obeid, another town it has struggled to assert full control of.
Both sides in Sudan’s 18-month-old civil war have committed abuses that may amount to war crimes, a UN-mandated mission said on Friday, calling for peacekeepers and a country-wide arms embargo.
On Saturday, Sudan’s army-aligned foreign ministry rejected both recommendations, calling the idea of international peacekeepers “the wish of Sudan’s enemies and it will not be fulfilled.”
TEHRAN — A released Israeli captive says that Benjamin Netanyahu and the army of the Zionist regime know nothing about the tunnels of the Palestinian resistance movement Hamas in Gaza.
Netanyahu is a liar, Adina Moshe was quoted by Arab news outlets as saying on Sunday.
Israel’s so-called security service, Shin Bet, has asked Moshe to draw pictures of the tunnels in the Gaza Strip, according to the news.
“The Shin Bet asked me to draw a map of the tunnels in Gaza because they know nothing about them,” Moshe was quoted by Al Mayadeen as saying.
Moshe described the Gaza tunnels as a “vast underground maze stretching across the entire area.”
During the interview, Moshe rejected the military pressure on Gaza as it does not help release the Zionist captives.
Last night, thousands of Zionists staged a demonstration in support of an agreement on the exchange of prisoners with Hamas.
After 11 months of massacre in Gaza, Israel has not yet achieved its two goals which were the annihilation of Hamas and the release of the Israeli captives.
DAKAR — At least 16 people were killed in a traffic accident in central Senegal on Monday, the Senegalese national news agency APS reported, citing local administrative sources.
The accident involving a truck and a passenger bus occurred Monday morning in the Bambey Department, and 11 people were seriously injured, according to the report.
According to witnesses, the bus, which was attempting to overtake another passenger vehicle, collided with a truck traveling in the opposite direction, said the report.
