  • Israeli strikes in central Syria kill seven: war monitor

DAMASCUS — Israeli strikes in central Syria killed at least seven people late Sunday, including three civilians, a war monitor reported.

Since the start of the civil war in Syria in 2011, Israel has carried out hundreds of strikes there, targeting pro-Iranian groups in particular.

“The number of dead in the Israeli strikes on the Masyaf region stands at seven, namely three civilians, including a man and his son who were in a car, and four unidentified soldiers,” said the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, which has a vast network of sources inside the country.

The attack also wounded at least 15 others and destroyed military facilities in the area, the Observatory said.

“Thirteen violent explosions rang out in the zone housing scientific research centers in Masyaf where pro-Iranian groups and weapons development experts are present,” the group said in an earlier statement.

The Syrian state news agency Sana had previously reported five killed and 19 wounded near Masyaf, citing a medical source.

“Around 11:20 p.m. (2020 GMT) on Sunday, the Israeli enemy carried out an air attack from the northwest of Lebanon targeting a number of military sites in the central region,” Sana reported, citing a military source.

“Our air defense shot down some missiles.”

Israeli air raids in Syria have intensified since the October 7 Hamas attack on Israel that sparked the war in Gaza.

Israeli authorities rarely comment on individual strikes in Syria, but have repeatedly said they will not allow arch-enemy Iran to expand its presence there.

At the end of August, three pro-Iranian fighters were killed in the central region of Homs in strikes attributed to Israel, the Observatory said.

A few days later, the Israeli military said it had killed an unspecified number of fighters belonging to Hamas ally Islamic Jihad in a strike in Syria near the Lebanese border.

  • 1 killed in north Peru wildfires

LIMA — At least one person was killed and 16 others treated for smoke inhalation as wildfires raged in northern Peru’s Lambayeque region, local authorities said Sunday.

The fatal victim, a 40-year-old female farmer in the town of Incahuasi, suffered burns all over her body, according to Radio Programas del Peru, a radio and television broadcasting company in Peru.

Peru’s National Meteorology and Hydrology Service warned that from Sunday through Wednesday, atmospheric conditions could lead to the “start and spread of forest fires.”

The absence of precipitation is expected to persist in these regions, along with decreasing humidity and increasing daytime temperatures, it added.

  • Bus plunges off mountain road in S. Yemen, 15 killed

ADEN, Yemen — At least 15 people were killed and three others injured when a passenger bus fell off a mountain road in Yemen’s southern province of Lahj on Sunday, a security official told Xinhua.

The official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the accident occurred in the Maqatrah district on a hazardous road linking the provinces of Aden and Taiz. He added the bus fell from a steep slope and plunged into a rocky valley below after the driver lost control due to a brake failure.

The official confirmed that the death toll includes women and children. Eyewitnesses described the accident as “horrific,” noting that the impact was so severe that some victims were ejected from the vehicle.

Maqatrah, known for its dangerous mountain routes, has seen numerous accidents in recent years. Local observers said the incident highlights the broader impact of Yemen’s decade-long civil war on civilian safety and infrastructure. With main interprovincial roads often blocked by warring factions, civilians are forced to use perilous alternative routes, including hazardous mountain passes.

Yemen’s crisis began in late 2014 when the Houthi group took control of the capital, Sanaa, leading to a Saudi-led military intervention and escalating into what the United Nations now describes as the world’s worst humanitarian crisis.

  • Russia takes Ukrainian town in advance on Pokrovsk

MOSCOW — Russia said on Sunday its forces had taken full control of a town in eastern Ukraine as Moscow’s forces advance on the strategically important city of Pokrovsk and seek to pierce the Ukrainian defensive front lines.
Russian forces, which control about a fifth of Ukraine since invading in February 2022, are advancing in eastern Ukraine in an attempt to take the whole of the Donbas, which is about half the size of the U.S. state of Ohio.

Russia’s defence ministry said its forces had taken the town of Novohrodivka, which lies 12 km (7 miles) from Pokrovsk, an important rail and road hub for Ukrainian forces in the area. The town had a population of 14,000 before the war.
Yuri Podolyaka, an influential Ukrainian-born, pro-Russian military blogger, published maps showing Russian forces attacking beyond Novohrodivka in at least two places less than 7 km (4 miles) from Pokrovsk.

The General Staff of the Ukrainian military, in a late afternoon report, described the situation as “tense” throughout the Pokrovsk sector and said “fierce battles” gripped areas around several towns, including Novohrodivka.
“So far, the enemy has carried out 23 assaults on Ukrainian positions,” the report said. Battles are going on in six locations.”
Reuters was unable to immediately verify battlefield reports from either side due to restrictions on reporting in the war.

President Vladimir Putin said last week that a Ukrainian incursion into the Russian region of Kursk had failed to slow Russia’s own advance in eastern Ukraine and had weakened Kyiv’s defences along the front line in a boost to Moscow.
Ukraine’s top military commander said on Thursday that Kyiv’s incursion into the Kursk region was working and that there had been no Russian advances on Pokrovsk for the previous six days.

He said that one of the objectives of the Kursk incursion was to divert Russian forces from other areas, primarily Pokrovsk and Kurakhove. Russia had diverted large numbers to Kursk, but was also strengthening the Pokrovsk front, he added.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy has said the Kursk operation was also to prevent Russian forces from crossing the border in the opposite direction.
Russia currently controls about 80% of Donbas. Given the speed of recent Russian advances in the east, some Russian war bloggers have raised concern about the army overreaching itself.
Putin ordered tens of thousands of troops into Ukraine more than two and a half years ago in what he calls a special military operation. Ukraine and its Western backers have vowed to defeat Russian forces and expel all Russian troops.

  • 80% of world population experiencing famine are from Palestine: UN rapporteur

TEHRAN — Michael Fakhri, the UN Special Rapporteur on the Right to Food, has said that by December, Palestinians in Gaza made up 80 percent of the people in the world experiencing famine or catastrophic hunger.

In a report presented to the UN General Assembly this week, Fakhri stated that since the Israeli military aggression against Gaza began in early October, 2024, the flow of food, medicine, and other humanitarian supplies have been severely restricted.

The UN has accused the Tel Aviv regime of conducting a “starvation campaign” against Palestinians in the Gaza Strip, warning that the regime is weaponizing humanitarian aid to inflict harm on residents of the besieged area.

He further noted, “Never in post-war history had a population been made to go hungry so quickly and so completely as was the case for the 2.3 million Palestinians living in Gaza.”
