JERUSALEM — The Israeli military on Friday said air raid sirens sounded in central Israel, including areas north of the commercial hub of Tel Aviv, after an aircraft infiltrated.
“Sirens have been activated in several areas in central Israel following an intrusion of hostile aircraft.
Interception attempts have been made, and details are under investigation.
Additional explosions may be heard, originating from interceptions or debris,” the military said in a statement.
Roughly 20 minutes after the alert, Israel’s military said the incident had ended.
The air raid sirens came as Israelis observe the Yom Kippur holiday.
Earlier Friday evening, air raid sirens blared in dozens of areas across northwestern after dozens of projectiles were fired from Lebanon, the military said.
From sundown on Friday until nightfall on Saturday, markets are closed, flights stopped and public transport halted as most Jews fast and pray on the Day of Atonement.
Due to its status as Judaism’s holiest day, Yom Kippur is traditionally observed with a complete media silence during the period.
Media outlets, however, have pledged to cover major developments or updates, as Israel fights Hezbollah in Lebanon and Hamas Palestinians militants in Gaza.
TEHRAN — The public relations of the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) announced the discovery of the body of martyr General Abbas Nilfroshan, who was martyred in the Zionist terrorist attack on the outskirts of Beirut.
“With thanks and gratitude to the One and Only God, it brings to the attention of the noble and heroic nation of Iran that with the day-to-day efforts of the search group for the bodies of the martyrs of the brutal and bloodthirsty Zionist regime in the suburbs of Beirut, the body of Major General Abbas Nilfrushan, the superior military adviser of the Islamic Republic of Iran, who was martyred along with the leader of the resistance, Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah, the secretary general of Hezbollah of Lebanon, has been discovered,” the IRGC said.
On Friday evening, the Zionist regime’s planes bombed the residential areas of “Hare Harik” neighborhood in the suburbs of Beirut.
Some sources of the Zionist regime announced that the attack on the southern suburbs of Beirut was carried out by eight to 12 jet fighters at the same time and 2,000 pounds of American bunker-buster bombs were used.
In these attacks, Mujahideen such as Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah, Secretary General of Hezbollah of Lebanon, and General Nilforushan were martyred.
GAZA — Gaza’s civil defense agency Friday said at least 30 people have been killed by Israeli strikes throughout the day in northern Gaza’s Jabalia town and refugee camp amid intense combat operations by the Israeli army in the area.
The agency’s spokesman Mahmoud Bassal said that a strike that occurred before 9:40 p.m. local time (1840 GMT) had left “12 dead, including women and children” in the town.
Before that incident, Ahmad Kahlout — director of the agency in northern Gaza — said 18 people had been killed by several strikes, including hits on “eight schools” in the camp that were serving as shelters for displaced people.
JERUSALEM — One of the two drones launched from Lebanon into central Israel on Friday night hit a residential building in the Israeli city of Herzliya without causing any casualties, said the Israel Defense Forces (IDF).
The other drone was intercepted by the Israeli Air Force, as the two drones were tracked from the moment they crossed into Israeli territory, the IDF said.
Meanwhile, Israel’s Channel 12 TV news reported that occupants of the building were in a protected area at the time of the attack, as warning sirens had been activated in Herzliya and nearby cities Ramat Hasharon and Hod Hasharon, all located in the Tel Aviv metropolis.
According to the municipality of Herzliya, power lines fell as a result of the attack, causing outages in several areas of the city.
Earlier in the day, the IDF said more than 100 rockets and missiles were fired from Lebanon into northern Israel, with about 80 launches occurring within a four-minute span.
The attacks came as Israel prepared to observe Yom Kippur, the holiest day in the Jewish calendar. Despite the shutdown of most services for the holiday, the country remains on high alert amid the fighting in Gaza and the renewed tensions with Lebanon.
So far Hezbollah has not commented on any of those attacks.
OSLO — Norwegian Foreign Minister Espen Barth Eide has condemned the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) for an attack on the United Nations peacekeeping force in Lebanon (UNIFIL).
“It is deeply concerning that UNIFIL has come under fire from Israeli forces,” Eide said in a press release on Friday.
He described the incident as “highly reprehensible,” stressing that UNIFIL plays a critical role in monitoring the situation and acting as a neutral force to help de-escalate tensions and prevent further conflict. “The UN’s positions and infrastructure are well-known and clearly marked,” he added.
Eide urged all parties to respect international humanitarian law and ensure the protection of civilians. He also called for strict adherence to UN Security Council Resolution 1701, which aims to maintain peace along the Israeli-Lebanese border.
The UNIFIL said on Thursday that an Israeli tank fired on a watchtower in its headquarters in Naqoura, southern Lebanon, injuring two members.
“This morning, two peacekeepers were injured after an IDF Merkava tank fired its weapon toward an observation tower at UNIFIL’s headquarters in Naqoura, directly hitting it and causing them to fall,” said the UN agency in a statement, adding that the injuried are not in serious condition, but remain in hospital.
The statement noted that the IDF soldiers also fired at a UN position in Labbouneh, hitting the entrance to the bunker where peacekeepers were sheltering, and damaging vehicles and a communications system.
XI’AN — A water tank fire truck overturned and fell into a river in northwest China’s Shaanxi Province on Friday, killing five and injuring one on board.
The accident occurred at around 10 a.m., when the truck was heading towards Baxian Township in Pingli County, according to local authorities.
Following the accident, rescue and follow-up disposal measures were initiated immediately. Investigation into the cause of the accident is underway.

MILAN — Swedish activist Greta Thunberg attended a climate change and pro-Palestinian rally in Milan on Friday, days after her criticism of Israel sparked a row over protests in Germany.
More than 1,000 people, many of them teenagers, joined a peaceful march in the northern Italian city organized by Fridays For Future, the climate change movement Thunberg helped found.
Wearing a keffiyeh, a traditional scarf symbolising the Palestinian struggle against Israel, Thunberg walked near the front of the procession as other protesters waved flags, held banners and danced to music.
“Palestinians have been living under suffocating oppression for decades by an apartheid regime, and during the last year with Israel’s live broadcasted genocide, the world has once again abandoned Palestine,” the 21-year-old said in a speech.
The Gaza war began on October 7 last year, when Hamas militants stormed across the border and carried out the worst attack on Israel in its history.
The militants took 251 people hostage in an attack that resulted in the deaths of 1,206 people, most of them civilians, according to an AFP tally based on official Israeli figures.
Israel’s retaliatory military offensive in Gaza has killed more than 42,000 people, most of them civilians, according to figures provided by the Hamas-run territory’s health ministry.
The United Nations has acknowledged the figures to be reliable.
Thunberg drew a link between global warming and the weapons industry.
“The fight for climate justice is a fight against the fossil fuel industry, just as much as it is a fight against the weapon industries, militarization and the over-extraction of natural resources,” she said.
German police on Tuesday closed a pro-Palestinian protest camp that had invited Thunberg after a rally she attended in Berlin Monday — the anniversary of the Hamas attack — ended in clashes with police.
She accused Germany of “silencing and threatening activists.”
The Milan march was part of a “national strike for the climate,” a series of protests organized by Fridays For Future across Italy.
“Demonstrating is the only weapon we have against the injustice that we suffer,” said protester Sofia Parisi, 17.
JERUSALEM — A Thai worker was killed by an ammunition blast in the village of Yir’on in northern Israel, near the Lebanese border, the Israel Defense Forces said in a statement on Friday.
The Upper Galilee Regional Council, which has jurisdiction over the village, reported that the victim was Nisan Miram, 42, who worked in the agricultural sector.
The Israeli news website Ynet reported that the ammunition was probably previously fired by Hezbollah and had not been cleared from the village.
Israeli Magen David Adom emergency medical service initially reported that Miram was killed by an anti-tank missile fired from Lebanon, but an army investigation revealed a different circumstance.
Following the incident, Israel’s Interior Minister Moshe Arbel stated that it is prohibited by law to employ foreign workers in the displaced communities in northern Israel.
The minister added that he had agreed with the Population and Immigration Authority to tighten enforcement against employers.
BEIRUT — The United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) said on Friday that two peacekeepers were injured in two explosions near a watchtower in the Lebanese border area of Labbouneh.
According to a UNIFIL post on X, several walls at the UN position near the Blue Line in Labbouneh collapsed when an Israeli caterpillar struck the perimeter, and Israeli tanks moved close to the UN position.
UNIFIL said that its peacekeepers remained on site and that a rapid reaction force was dispatched to assist and reinforce the area.
These incidents place the UN peacekeepers in “extremely grave danger,” it noted, stressing the need to ensure the safety and security of UN personnel and property and to respect the sanctity of UN premises at all times.
The UN body condemned the attack, saying “any deliberate attack on peacekeepers is a grave violation of international humanitarian law and Security Council Resolution 1701.”
On Thursday, UNIFIL said in a statement that two of its members were injured after an Israeli Merkava tank fired towards a watchtower at its headquarters in Naqoura.
Israeli soldiers on Wednesday deliberately fired at and disabled surveillance cameras around the site, and it also deliberately fired at UN observation post 1-32A in Ras al-Naqoura where regular tripartite meetings were held before the conflict, damaging lighting and a relay station, the UNIFIL said.
Since early October, the Israeli army has been carrying out specific ground operations against Hezbollah targets near the Lebanese border, and intensifying its airstrikes and artillery shelling, especially on the southern suburbs of Beirut, the stronghold of Hezbollah.
Since Sept. 23, the Israeli army has been conducting an intensive air attack on Lebanon in an escalation with Hezbollah, which has been exchanging fire with the Israeli army across the Lebanese-Israeli border since Oct. 8, 2023.
BEIJING — China’s population aged 60 and above reached nearly 297 million in 2023, accounting for 21.1 percent of the total, as the country works to tackle the challenges of an aging society, according to an official report released Friday.
Released jointly by the Ministry of Civil Affairs and China National Committee on Ageing, the report on the development of the country’s work on aging in 2023 stated that the number of people aged 65 and above reached 216.76 million, accounting for 15.4 percent of the total population.
The report shows that China’s pension insurance coverage has continued to expand. As of the end of 2023, the number of people participating in basic pension insurance nationwide reached 1.066 billion, an increase of 13.36 million compared to the end of the previous year.
The report noted that China has been enhancing urban living circles and expanding home-based care services for seniors. By the end of 2023, 3,476 convenient living circles were established across 150 pilot areas, serving approximately 64.55 million elderly residents.
As of the end of 2023, China boasted 7,881 integrated medical and elderly care institutions, an increase of 12.8 percent year on year, according to the report.
Like many countries, China is experiencing a demographic shift with an aging population as it grows wealthier. The Chinese government is sparing no effort to address this challenge, promoting the development of the silver economy while introducing major policies to improve services for senior citizens and boost the birth rate.
In August, the State Council issued a guideline setting out 20 key tasks to advance the high-quality development of service consumption. This included detailed measures for developing the silver economy and boosting consumption in the childcare sectors.
Tommy diwakili peguam, Alan Adrian Gomez manakala peguam, Datuk Ambiga Sreenevasan mewakili syarikat penerbitan, GB Gerakbudaya Enterprise Sdn Bhd sebagai defendan kedua.
TEHRAN — The head of Iranian Red Crescent Society (IRCS) announced the attack by the Zionist regime on the 56-bed field hospital of IRCS on the border of Syria and Lebanon.
“This action by the Zionist occupying regime is a clear violation of the international laws related to humanitarian rights in the prohibition of attacks on medical centers and It is relief and we intend to file a complaint against the occupying regime through international forums,” Pir-Hossein Koulivand said.
He pointed out that this action of the Zionist regime is condemned according to the principles and rules of international humanitarian law, according to which any attack and assault on civilian places and centers, especially medical centers and hospitals, is absolutely prohibited.

A Ukrainian journalist who wrote first-hand accounts of life under Russian occupation has died in Russian detention, officials said on Thursday.
Viktoria Roshchyna, who turned 28 this month, provided freelance reports for Ukrainian media outlets Ukrainska Pravda and Hromadske Radio and for U.S.-funded Radio Liberty.
Roshchyna wrote vivid accounts of life in Crimea after Russia annexed the peninsula from Ukraine in 2014 and areas of eastern Ukraine seized by Russian-funded separatists.
She also documented the nearly three-month defence of the port of Mariupol after Moscow launched its February 2022 full-scale invasion.
At least 17 journalists have been killed while reporting on the war, according to international organisations.
Roshchyna was initially held for 10 days in southern Ukraine after the invasion and had embarked on a new trip into occupied regions when she disappeared in August 2023. Russian officials acknowledged last May that she was being held.
Her death was announced on television by Petro Yatsenko, press officer for the body serving the interests of prisoners of war. The circumstances of her death were not yet known, he said.
A spokesperson for Ukraine’s HUR Intelligence Directorate, Andriy Yusov, told public broadcaster Suspilne that Roshchyna had been on a list of prisoners due to be exchanged. She had been due to be transferred to Moscow from detention in the southern city of Taganrog, he said.

YARZE, Lebanon/UNITED NATIONS — United Nations peacekeepers are determined to remain at their posts in southern Lebanon, the force’s spokesperson said on Thursday, despite Israeli attacks in recent days that have wounded U.N. personnel and prompted international alarm.
Andrea Tenenti said Israeli attacks on the peacekeeping force known as UNIFIL with tank shells and small arms fire had left two wounded members in hospital and knocked out some of their monitoring capabilities on Wednesday and Thursday.
“Definitely, this is probably one of the most serious events or incidents that we’ve been witnessing in the last 12 months,” Tenenti said in an interview, referring to exchanges of fire between Israeli troops and the Lebanese armed group Hezbollah.
The force’s 50 contributing countries had agreed on Thursday to keep deploying more than 10,400 peacekeepers between the Litani River in the north and the U.N.-recognized boundary between Lebanon and Israel known as the Blue Line in the south.
“We are there because the (U.N.) Security Council has asked us to be there. So we are staying until the situation becomes impossible for us to operate,” Tenenti said.
UNIFIL said an Israeli tank fired at a watchtower at the force’s main headquarters in Naqoura on Thursday, hitting the tower and causing two peacekeepers to fall out of it.
Israeli troops also fired at a nearby position, damaging vehicles and a communications system, and on Wednesday “deliberately fired at and disabled” cameras monitoring the area, the peacekeeping force said in a statement.
Israel said its troops operated on Thursday near a UNIFIL base in Naqoura but said it instructed the U.N. forces in the area to remain in protected spaces, then opened fire.
‘IN JEOPARDY’
UNIFIL is mandated by the Security Council to help the Lebanese army keep the country’s south free of weapons and armed personnel other than those of the state. That has sparked friction with Hezbollah, which effectively controls the area.
Iran-backed Hezbollah has been exchanging fire with Israel since Oct. 8, 2023, in solidarity with Hamas but the fighting has dramatically escalated in recent weeks, with Israel ramping up its strikes and making ground incursions across the length of the mountainous border between Israel and Lebanon.
The escalation has displaced about 1.2 million people in Lebanon and led to UNIFIL virtually suspending its operational activities, said U.N. peacekeeping chief Jean-Pierre Lacroix.
Speaking to the Security Council on Thursday, Lacroix said UNIFIL forces are “increasingly in jeopardy” and confined to their bases, and that one UNIFIL contractor had already been killed.
Lacroix said UNIFIL had decided to relocate 300 peacekeepers to larger bases temporarily for their safety.
Tenenti said some bases were also hosting displaced Lebanese from areas heavily bombed by Israel.
Tenenti said the attacks on the watchtower, cameras, communications equipment and lighting had limited the group’s monitoring abilities.
U.N. sources said they feared Israeli attacks would make it impossible to monitor any violations of international law in the zone.
Tenenti said the force still had crucial work to do “assisting local NGOs and also U.N. agencies, to bring the much-needed food and water to all these villages.”
“Thousands of people have left, but thousands are still stuck in this area. So deconflicting is very important. That has been very, very challenging,” Tenenti said.
The U.N.’s children’s agency UNICEF said it and the World Food Programme were delivering essential aid to the thousands of families still in border villages in southern Lebanon “with UNIFIL support in implementing deconfliction mechanisms.”
Journalists including Reuters also regularly coordinate with UNIFIL when traveling to southern Lebanon to make sure all parties know they are in the area.
The Israeli military asked U.N. peacekeepers last week to prepare to relocate more than 5 km (3 miles) from the border “as soon as possible, in order to maintain your safety,” according to an excerpt from the message seen by Reuters.
In the same period, UNIFIL sent a letter to the Israeli military objecting to army vehicles and troops positioning themselves “in immediate proximity” to U.N. positions on several occasions, including by circling Israeli Merkava tanks around their posts or parking next to them.
The letter, dated Oct. 3 and seen by Reuters, said Israeli forces had conducted “engineering works” on the outer perimeter of a U.N. peacekeeping post that resulted in the Israeli position and the U.N. post “effectively becoming one position.”
It said those activities were “endangering the safety and security of UNIFIL personnel and premises.”
The Israeli military had asked UNIFIL to withdraw from its posts in 2006, during the last major conflict between Israel and Hezbollah, according to U.N. sources. It did not withdraw at the time.

Ambulances rushed to the scene to transport victims to hospitals, while civil defense teams worked to extinguish the fires caused by the explosion.
Hospitals in Beirut are calling on people to donate blood of all types.
Israeli media reported that Wafiq Safa, head of Hezbollah’s Liaison and Coordination Unit, was targeted in the airstrike, while Al Jazeera TV channel said Safa had survived the attack.

BEIRUT — State media said an Israeli strike hit the central area of Lebanon’s capital on Thursday, the third such attack on Beirut since Israel escalated its air campaign last month.
Israel has repeatedly pounded southern Beirut suburbs, the bastion of Lebanon’s Hezbollah movement, bastion for more than two weeks but strikes have rarely hit in the city’s center.
“An enemy strike targeted the area of Ras Al-Nabaa-Nweiri” residential neighborhoods, adding that ambulances rushed to the targeted sites.
An AFP journalist in Beirut heard three loud explosions.
A security official, requesting anonymity to discuss sensitive matters, told AFP that the strikes hit two locations in the area of Nweiri.
AFP live footage showed two plumes of smoke billowing in between densely-packed buildings where lights were still on in the windows.
Last month, Israeli bombing killed Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah in south Beirut.

An Israeli police officer aims his weapon from a vehicle following a suspected stabbing attack in Hadera, Israel, on Oct. 9, 2024. (Reuters)
JERUSALEM — A man wounded in a stabbing rampage in the Israeli town of Hadera has died of his wounds, the hospital where he was being treated said on Thursday.
Rafael Mordechai Fishof was one of the six people wounded in what police called a “terrorist attack” on Wednesday in four locations of Hadera, before the assailant was “neutralized.”
“Unfortunately, despite the efforts of the medical team, the injured person was pronounced dead,” said a statement from the Hillel Yaffe Medical Center in Hadera, where Fishof had been admitted.
“Yesterday, at the hospital, we prayed for his recovery and now our hearts are broken by this difficult news,” Hadera mayor Nir Ben Haim said in a statement, referring to Fishof, 35, a father of six.
Palestinian militant group Hamas, with which Israeli forces are locked in a fierce war in Gaza, praised the Hadera attack, calling it a “heroic stabbing operation.”
Hamas also called for “more painful strikes against the occupation (Israel).”
Israeli authorities have not provided information about the suspect but Israeli media identified him as Ahmad Jabareen, 36, an Israeli citizen from the Arab town of Umm Al-Fahm.
The Hadera attack came more than a week after seven people were killed in a shooting and stabbing claimed by Hamas in the Israeli commercial hub Tel Aviv.
Palestinian militants have carried out several attacks on Israelis since October 7 last year, when Hamas attacked southern Israel, sparking war in Gaza.
