  • Russian expert hails Iran’s missile response to Zionist regime

MOSCOW — Russian analyst Grigory Lukyanov has lauded the missile response of the Islamic Republic to the Zionist regime.

Lukyanov, a researcher at the Center for Arab and Islamic Studies at the Institute of Oriental Studies of the Russian Academy of Sciences, praised Iran’s Operation True Promise 2 in an interview with IRNA which was published on Sunday.

The anti-Israeli operation took place late on Tuesday (October 1, 2024) in retaliation for Israel’s assassination of Hamas chief Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran on July 31, as well as the regime’s assassination of Hezbollah Secretary General Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah and an Iranian military advisor in Beirut.

Lukyanov stated that Israel is unable to respond Iran now because it is still in shock of Operation Al-Aqsa Storm which occurred on October 7, 2023, and its anniversary falls on tomorrow.

The missile response of the Islamic Republic to the Israeli regime is in line with the doctrine and policy set by the country’s Supreme Leader, he said.

Some analysts say that Iran’s response proves Tehran’s readiness to respond to Israel’s armed and military actions, he added.

After the assassination of Haniyeh, many people in the world were waiting for Iran’s promised response, he pointed out.

He noted that it is the Israeli side that continuously refrains from any mediation efforts aimed at reducing tensions in the Gaza Strip and, consequently, preventing the spread of attacks on Lebanon, Syria, Iraq, and Yemen.

  • Iran stands with Hezbollah, backs efforts for ceasefire in Lebanon, Gaza: FM

BEIRUT — Iran’s Foreign Minister Seyyed Abbas Araghchi affirmed Friday that his country will stand with Hezbollah and always support Lebanon and its people.

Araghchi made the remarks at a press conference after two separate meetings with Lebanese Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri and Prime Minister Najib Mikati during his visit to Beirut.

Araghchi described his visit “under current difficult circumstances” as the “best evidence that Iran stands by Hezbollah with all its capacity” and a gesture to show solidarity with “the Shiites in Lebanon and the entire Lebanese people.”

The minister called Iran’s Tuesday missile attack on Israel “a legitimate self-defense based on the principles of the United Nations Charter.”

He stressed that Iran “has no plans to continue attacks unless Israel decides to continue its attacks,” warning if Israel takes any step or action against Iran, the response will be “stronger and proportionate.”

Araghchi pointed out that his talks with Lebanese officials center on the ceasefire and that “consultations are ongoing with concerned countries.”

“We support the efforts toward a ceasefire, provided that, first, the rights of the Lebanese people are taken into account and it is accepted by the (Hezbollah) resistance, and second, that it comes simultaneously with a ceasefire in Gaza,” he said.

Meanwhile, a statement released by Mikati’s office said Araghchi has expressed during the talks “his country’s concern and support for Lebanon in the face of the Israeli aggression.”

According to the statement, Iran will launch a diplomatic campaign and request a meeting of the Organization of the Islamic Conference to support Lebanon.

Araghchi arrived in Beirut for a visit on Friday, during which the top Iranian diplomat is scheduled to meet with high-ranking Lebanese officials. In addition, Iran will provide 10 tons of food and medicine in aid to Lebanon, according to Iran’s Foreign Ministry.

The visit comes as Israel has recently intensified its strikes against Hezbollah across Lebanon, which fueled its ongoing clashes with Hezbollah since Oct. 8, 2023, when the Lebanon-based Shiite group fired rockets at Israel in support of Hamas in the Gaza Strip, prompting retaliatory fire and airstrikes from Israel in southeastern Lebanon.

  • Death toll rises to 19 after flood hit central BiH

SARAJEVO — The death toll from rain-triggered flash floods in central Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH) has risen to 19, the local government said on Friday.

The Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Herzegovina-Neretva Canton (HNC) confirmed that 16 individuals have been killed so far in the Jablanica municipality, including a baby. Doctors are racing against time to save the mother, an official from HNC said.

In addition, the civil protection services of Central Bosnia Canton have confirmed three deaths in Fojnica, some 50 km from the capital city of Sarajevo.

A large number of people have been reported missing in Jablanica and Konjic, along the Neretva River, one of the country’s major waterways.

Darko Juka, a public relations official with the HNC government, said that emergency services are doing everything possible to rescue victims and transport them to nearby medical facilities.

The most critical situation is in Donja Jablanica village, which has been completely cut off due to collapsed roads. Rescue teams use boats provided by the Armed Forces and other emergency services to reach the area.

Severe flooding has also disrupted roadways, isolating several municipalities. Miroslav Jakic, director of the civil protection administration of Central Bosnia Canton, confirmed that all rivers and streams in the region have overflowed their banks, and civil protection teams are en route to the affected areas.

BiH’s Minister of Defense Zukan Helez has deployed the Armed Forces to assist in rescue efforts and protect civilians. The Ministry of Security confirmed that additional support, including helicopters, has been requested for the affected regions.

  • Pilot dies as F-18 fighter crashes in northeastern Spain

MADRID — The pilot of a Spanish Air-Force F-18 fighter died on Friday after his aircraft crashed near the municipality of Perales de Alfambra in the northeastern region of Aragon, the Spanish air force has confirmed.

The accident happened shortly after 13:00 hours local time (11:00 hours GMT), under circumstances that remain unknown. The pilot, who has been identified as Lieutenant Colonel Pablo Estrada Martin, was unable to eject from the plane.

The air force confirmed the pilot’s death on social media platform X and the Ministry of Defense also extended its condolences.

The pilot, who was stationed at the Torrejon de Ardoz airbase on the outskirts of Madrid, is reported by the Spanish media to have had “ample experience” with over 1,500 hours flying on F-18s.

This is the latest in a series of accidents the Spanish Air Force has suffered with the F-18, with four pilots losing their lives in a dozen accidents since the U.S.-made fighter jet was introduced into service in Spain in 1986.

Last accident occurred in May 2023 when an F-18 crashed on takeoff in Zaragoza. In that instance, the pilot managed to eject safely.

  • Russia has decided ‘at highest level’ to remove Taliban from list of terrorist groups, TASS reports

MOSCOW — Russia’s Foreign Ministry said on Friday that a decision to remove the Taliban from a list of terrorist organizations had been “taken at the highest level,” the state TASS news agency reported.

The decision needs to be followed up with various legal procedures in order to make it a reality, President Vladimir Putin’s special representative on Afghanistan, Zamir Kabulov, was quoted as saying.

Putin said in July that Russia considered Afghanistan’s Taliban movement an ally in the fight against terrorism.

Russia has been slowly building ties with the Taliban since it seized power in Afghanistan in August 2021 as US-led forces withdrew after 20 years of war but the movement is still officially outlawed in Russia.

No country has formally recognized the Taliban as the country’s legitimate leadership, although China and the UAE have accepted its ambassadors.

Russia added the Taliban to its list of terrorist organizations in 2003. Removing it would be an important step by Moscow toward normalizing relations with Afghanistan.

The Taliban’s acting foreign minister Amir Khan Muttaqi said in a speech in Moscow that recent decisions by Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan to remove the former insurgents from a list of banned groups was a welcome step.

“We also appreciate the positive remarks by the high-ranking officials of the Russian Federation in this regard and hope to see more effective steps soon,” he said.

In separate comments on Friday, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said Moscow was convinced of the need to maintain “pragmatic dialogue” with the current Afghan government.

“It is obvious that it is impossible to solve problems or even discuss an Afghan settlement without Kabul,” Lavrov said.

“Moscow will continue its course on developing political, trade and economic ties with Kabul,” he added, speaking at a meeting in Moscow with Muttaqi and representatives of neighboring countries.

While he did not mention the Taliban by name, he praised the current Afghan leadership for its efforts to curb drug production and fight Islamic State, which is outlawed in Russia.

Muttaqi said that countries in the region should cooperate against the Islamic State, which he said had established training centers outside Afghanistan.

Lavrov said the United States should return confiscated assets to Afghanistan and the West should acknowledge responsibility for the post-conflict reconstruction of the country.

Lavrov also called for an increase in humanitarian aid to Afghanistan, and said Russia would keep sending it food and essential goods.

Russia has a troubled history in Afghanistan, where the Soviet army invaded in 1979 to support a pro-Moscow government but withdrew 10 years later after sustaining heavy casualties at the hands of mujahideen fighters.

Russia and its post-Soviet neighbors have suffered recurrent attacks from Islamist militant groups linked to Afghanistan — most recently in March, when 145 people were killed in an attack claimed by Islamic State at a concert hall near Moscow.

  • Philippines detains more than 250 in scam hub raid

MANILA — Philippine authorities have detained more than 250 people, most of them Chinese, in a raid on a suspected online scam farm in Manila, law enforcement officials said Friday.

Police and other authorities raided the office building late Thursday to find staff with hundreds of phones, computers, and pre-registered international and local SIM cards, the Presidential Anti-Organized Crime Commission said.

“These are red flags of love scamming that victimizes foreign nationals,” the commission said in a statement, referring to schemes in which scammers pretend to have romantic feelings for their victims in order to earn their trust and eventually steal their money.

International concern has been growing over similar scam farms in Asia, often staffed by victims of trafficking who were tricked or coerced into promoting bogus crypto investments and other cons.

In July, Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos outlawed all forms of offshore gaming operators, including Internet gaming license holders, after the gambling industry was found to be linked to financial scams, kidnapping, prostitution, human trafficking, torture and murder.

Thousands of foreign workers at the outlawed firms were given two months to leave the Philippines.

In the Manila raid on Thursday, 190 Chinese, two Taiwanese and 62 Filipinos were detained at the offices of a company called 3D Analyzer Information Technologies Inc.

The company used to have an Internet gaming license but subsequently told regulators it had “ceased operations,” Gilberto Cruz, the executive director of the anti-crime commission, told AFP.

“We’re looking for their passports or working visas, but they couldn’t show us anything,” Cruz added.

The commission will liaise with the Beijing and Taipei missions to help identify and arrange the deportation of the foreigners, the official said.

Meanwhile, Filipinos found to be involved in scamming activities will be charged in court, he added.

Cruz said the commission would also apply to the courts for warrants to search computers found inside the office.

  • 12 bodies found in Mexico’s Guanajuato state in latest cartel violence

CELAYA, Mexico — Twelve bodies were found on Thursday in the central Mexican state of Guanajuato, local authorities said, attributing the killings to disputes between organized crime groups.

Guanajuato, a thriving industrial center that is also home to popular tourist destinations, is currently Mexico’s most violent state, according to official homicide statistics.

The 12 bodies were found within two hours in five locations in the city of Salamanca, according to the state prosecutor’s office, which is investigating the crime.

The victims — three women and nine men — were found on roads, bridges and avenues, their bodies bearing gunshot wounds and signs of torture, while one was dismembered.

The state prosecutor’s office also said the perpetrators left messages in which a cartel claimed responsibility.

The bodies were found less than 24 hours after gunmen attacked a residential center for people suffering from addictions in the same municipality, killing four.

“This month of October has started with very high crime rates here. That makes 16 people (murdered) so far,” Salamanca Mayor Cesar Prieto told reporters.

But he said the violence affecting the city was “a temporary issue” that flares up “when one group decides to attack another.”

In Guanajuato, two cartels, the Santa Rosa de Lima and the Jalisco New Generation, are currently at war.

Hit by spiraling violence linked to organized crime, Mexico has recorded more than 450,000 murders since December 2006, when a controversial military anti-drug operation was launched.

New President Claudia Sheinbaum announced that she will present her national security plan next Tuesday.

  • Israel’s fresh airstrikes close Lebanon-Syria evacuation route

TEHRAN — The recent airstrikes by the Zionist Regime in Lebanon have blocked an important evacuation route between Lebanon and Syria.

The Israeli occupation has intensified its aggressive actions against Lebanon, targeting the Bekaa Valley, Baalbek-Hermel, the South, the southern suburb of Beirut, and the road connecting the Lebanese-Syrian border at the Masnaa and Jdeidet Yabous crossings, Beirut-based Al Mayadeen news network reported on Friday.

As a result, traffic between Syria and Lebanon has been suspended in both directions.

The Israeli raids also reached the town of Nabi Sheet in the Bekaa, east of Lebanon, and targeted the heights of Janta.

In the South, warplanes carried out strikes on the town of Aitat in the morning.

The Zionist regime has carried out massive airstrikes since September 23, claiming to target Hezbollah locations across Lebanon. These airstrikes have resulted in the deaths of more than 1,100 individuals, according to the Lebanese Health Ministry.

In response, Hezbollah has retaliated by launching multiple attacks against the Israeli positions in the northern occupied territories. In the past few days, Hezbollah has fired hundreds of rockets, targeting key Israeli positions.

  • Typhoon Krathon death toll in Philippines climbs to 5

MANILA — The death toll in Typhoon Krathon that hit the Philippines starting the weekend rose to at least five, with one person still missing, a disaster operations agency said Friday.

The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council said the deaths were recorded from two northernmost Philippine regions hit by Krathon.

The deaths included a 62-year-old male who drowned in Ilocos Norte and a 25-year-old who was electrocuted in Cagayan Valley. The agency said it was still validating the causes of the deaths of the three others.

The agency said search continued for the person swept away by a strong current.

The agency said that Krathon affected almost 243,000 people in at least 828 villages in Ilocos Norte, Cagayan Valley, and the Cordillera Administrative region in the northern part of the main Luzon island.

The agency estimated the initial cost of infrastructure and agriculture damage at over 1 billion pesos (17.77 million U.S. dollars).

An average of 20 typhoons lash the Philippines yearly.

  • Taiwan re-opens, mopping up after Typhoon Krathon

Fallen cargo containers are piled up after Typhoon Krathon made landfall in Kaohsiung, Taiwan October 4, 2024. REUTERS

KAOHSIUNG, Taiwan — Southern Taiwan worked on Friday to clear up damage from flooding and high winds after Typhoon Krathon slammed into a major port city, while most of the rest of the island resumed work and financial markets re-opened.

Krathon, now downgraded to a tropical depression, hit land in the southwestern city of Kaohsiung, inundating streets, blowing out the windows of some buildings and scattering debris amid record-breaking winds.

While the rest of Taiwan resumed work, the governments in Kaohsiung and neighbouring Pingtung county declared a fourth successive day off work as they scrambled to pump away floodwaters, remove fallen trees, and clear roads.

“We hope as fast as possible to resume transport, water and electricity supplies, so work and life can get back to normal,” Kaohsiung Mayor Chen Chi-mai told reporters.

The city government said it was tackling more than 2,000 trees that had fallen on roads, but reported only two injuries.

Workers used cranes to remove downed trees and traffic signs in Kaohsiung, a city and surrounds of 2.7 million people, with some roads blocked, forcing diversions of traffic and pedestrians.

“Sandbags didn’t work. The wind pressed the water in anyway,” said Clark Huang, 49. “Fortunately it lasted only a couple of hours and then we started cleaning up.”

Engineer Tsai Ming-an was cleaning up his home after floodwaters about 20 cm (7.8 inches) high washed through the entire ground floor.

“I have never seen winds like that,” said the 51-year-old.

    “It was so bad.”

Typhoons almost always hit Taiwan’s mountainous and sparsely populated east coast which faces the Pacific Ocean, but Krathon, unusually, struck its flat west coast.

Nearly 100,000 households, almost all in Kaohsiung and Pingtung, still had no power on Friday, while 129,000 households in Kaohsiung lacked water supply.

The fire department said the death toll remained at two, both men killed on the east coast before the typhoon made landfall, with one person missing and 667 injured.

Taiwan re-opened its north-south high speed rail line, as well as most ordinary rail routes except for two branch lines, but disruptions to air transport continued, with cancellations of 15 international and 88 domestic flights.

Workers at Kaohsiung port were clearing some freight containers blown off their stacks to make sure operations went unaffected, the transport ministry said.

Kaohsiung airport suffered damage to two air bridges, while the airport on the outlying Orchid Island had landing aids washed away, though both remained open, the ministry added.

The government also said it was investigating the cause of a Pingtung hospital fire that broke out as the typhoon was bearing down, killing nine people.

  • Mexican soldiers arrested after migrant shooting leaves six dead

MEXICO CITY — Mexican authorities arrested soldiers who were part of a patrol that opened fire on a pickup truck killing six migrants, federal prosecutors said on Thursday, two days after the incident.

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum condemned the killings, which happened the day she was inaugurated, and the country’s Catholic bishops sharply criticized the growing power of the military.

Six people died and 10 were injured in southern Chiapas state on Tuesday near the border with Guatemala after soldiers fired on the truck transporting 33 migrants.

“It’s a regrettable event and it must be investigated and punished,” said Sheinbaum during a press conference. “A situation like this cannot be repeated.”

Mexican federal prosecutors have identified three of the victims as Egyptian nationals, while one came from Honduras and another from Peru. Sheinbaum noted that one of the dead migrants was from El Salvador.

Later on Thursday, however, the Honduran foreign minister denied that any Honduran national died in the incident.

The other 27 migrants include citizens of Egypt, India, Pakistan, Nepal and Cuba, according to prosecutors.

In a statement, the prosecutors disclosed that the soldiers face an investigation in which local authorities are working with rights experts, immigration officials, the Guatemalan government and Interpol.

The surviving migrants are also being interviewed along with assistance from their nations’ consulates, as well as psychologists and other specialized personnel on hand, the statement added.

In its initial description of the deadly incident, Mexico’s defense ministry explained that soldiers opened fire after the pick-up truck tried to evade a military patrol and that soldiers reported hearing explosions before two officers opened fire.

In a statement released later on Thursday, Mexico’s Catholic bishops objected to what they described as the “disproportionate use of lethal force” by the soldiers.

“This tragedy arises not as an isolated event, but as a consequence of the militarization of migration policy and an increased presence of armed forces on the southern border of the country, which has been a constant,” according to the statement, which also called for an impartial probe into the incident.

Peru’s government also condemned the killings in a statement on Wednesday and insisted that Mexican authorities carry out an investigation.

The office of El Salvador’s president did not immediately respond to a request for comment, while Egypt’s Mexican embassy said it did not have information to share.

A security crisis has been growing in the southern Mexican region that borders Guatemala, where a territorial battle between powerful criminal groups has led to a sharp increase in violence over the last year.
