A top aide in the Iranian presidency has confirmed that the Israeli occupation attempted to assassinate Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian during a high-level military meeting amid the recent Israeli war on Iran.

In an exclusive statement to Al Mayadeen on Thursday, presidential advisor Sayyed Mehdi Tabatabaei said the Israeli regime targeted a gathering of political and military leaders, including President Pezeshkian, in what he described as a large-scale explosion. The incident occurred during the most intense phase of the Israeli aggression in June.

Sayyed Tabatabaei also revealed that in the final days of the confrontation, regional countries conveyed messages from both the United States and the Israeli regime requesting a ceasefire.

    Iran rejects deception diplomacy

On the diplomatic front, Sayyed Tabatabaei warned that Iran would not return to negotiations if the table is used again as a tool of deception. He made it clear that Tehran will not engage in talks over its missile capabilities or its nuclear enrichment program, which he described as “undeniable rights”.

Sayyed Tabatabaei also expressed deep mistrust toward the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Director Rafael Grossi, accusing the agency of double standards in its treatment of Iran’s peaceful nuclear program.

“The same country that used a nuclear bomb on another nation is now trying to block peaceful nuclear development in others,” he said, referring to the United States. He added that Iran would demand compensation for the damage done to its peaceful nuclear facilities.

Enrichment is part of Iran’s national identity

Separately, Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf told state television that uranium enrichment is “a part of Iran’s national culture” and cannot be dismantled by assassinations or military threats.

He also stressed that Iran’s missile capability is a non-negotiable red line, signaling unwavering resolve to preserve the country’s strategic deterrence.

Earlier this week, President Pezeshkian told American journalist Tucker Carlson that he was the target of an assassination attempt during the Israeli regime’s June attacks on Iranian territory.

Pezeshkian urges end to double standards

Pezeshkian stated that Tehran would continue cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) only if the organization addresses its perceived bias, while also asserting Iran’s preparedness to retaliate strongly against any potential aggression.

During a Wednesday evening phone call with European Council President Antonio Costa, President Pezeshkian emphasized Iran’s history of principled collaboration with the IAEA while stressing that ongoing cooperation depends on eliminating discriminatory practices in handling Iran’s nuclear file. Pezeshkian warned that further hostile actions would trigger an even stronger retaliation from Iran.

Emphasizing Iran’s commitment to peace, regional stability, and diplomatic engagement during this new political phase, President Pezeshkian criticized the reckless Israeli behavior as a source of global insecurity, pointing out that Tehran had sought dialogue yet was met with hostility from “Israel” and the US.

Addressing Costa’s worries about Iran’s reduced IAEA cooperation, Pezeshkian reiterated Tehran’s commitment to dialogue, diplomacy, and international law, framing recent parliamentary measures as a response to the agency’s perceived bias and unprofessionalism.

  • Armed men kidnap, kill nine bus passengers in Pakistan, say officials

QUETTA, Pakistan, July 10 – Armed men killed nine bus passengers after kidnapping them in Pakistan’s southwestern Balochistan province, officials said on Friday.

The passengers had been kidnapped from multiple buses on Thursday evening, said the provincial government spokesman Shahid Rind.

Their bodies with bullet wounds were found in mountains overnight, another government official Naveed Alam said.

    No one has claimed responsibility.

Separatist Baloch militants have in the past been involved in such incidents, killing passengers after identifying them as coming from the eastern Punjab province.

The Baloch Liberation Army is the strongest of a number of insurgent groups long operating in the area bordering Afghanistan and Iran, a mineral-rich region.

The ethnic Baloch militants blame authorities in Pakistan for stealing their regional resources to fund spending in Punjab province.

  • List of missing in Texas floods adds uncertainty to search for survivors

KERRVILLE, Texas, July 10 – Six days after flash floods swept through parts of Texas Hill Country, and killed at least 120, authorities say there are still more than 160 people unaccounted for, as thousands of searchers combed through piles of mud-covered debris for survivors on Thursday.

But that figure may not reflect the true number of missing people, according to disaster response experts.

The number of people reported missing in the aftermath of a natural disaster often turns out to be far greater than the eventual death toll.

Worried members of the public, unable to reach a relative or friend, report the name to local authorities and to crowd-sourced online databases, and it gets added to a list that can grow distressingly long.

  • UN human rights chief urges reversal of US sanctions on Francesca Albanese

GENEVA – The UN human rights chief on Thursday urged “the prompt reversal” of US sanctions against Francesca Albanese, the UN special rapporteur on the occupied Palestinian territory.

“UN Special Rapporteurs, along with other parts of the human rights ecosystem, address – by their nature – sensitive and often divisive issues that are of international concern,” Volker Turk said in a statement, adding even in the face of fierce disagreement, member states should engage “substantively and constructively, rather than resort to punitive measures.”

“Attacks and threats against Special Procedures mandate holders, as well as key institutions like the International Criminal Court, must stop,” Turk urged.

He noted that the solution is “not less, but more,” debate and dialogue on the very real human rights concerns they address.

The US imposed sanctions Wednesday on Albanese, citing her “efforts to prompt” International Criminal Court (ICC) action against US and Israeli officials.

“Today I am imposing sanctions on UN Human Rights Council Special Rapporteur Francesca Albanese for her illegitimate and shameful efforts to prompt (ICC) action against U.S. and Israeli officials, companies, and executives,” US Secretary of State Marco Rubio wrote on X.

Accusing Albanese of waging a “campaign of political and economic warfare” against both countries, he said the actions “will no longer be tolerated.”

The sanctions followed a report by Albanese last week that identified corporations allegedly facilitating Israeli occupation of Palestinian lands, including Microsoft, Alphabet, Amazon, and Palantir, which she said provide military hardware, surveillance technology, and infrastructure that support the illegal occupation.

The US has long been criticized for supporting Israel’s ongoing occupation and genocide of Palestinians, which since October 2023 has killed over 57,000 people, most of them women and children.

  • Russia says partnership with ASEAN contributes to ensuring stability in Asia-Pacific

ISTANBUL – Russia’s partnership with the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) contributes to ensuring stability in the Asia-Pacific region, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said on Thursday.

Addressing the Russia-ASEAN foreign ministers’ meeting in Kuala Lumpur, Lavrov said Russia can confidently describe ASEAN as a “truly reliable friend” and “like-minded” partner, and that both parties are united in their commitment to “developing broad, equal international cooperation based on the UN Charter in all its totality and interrelation of its principles.”

He said Moscow “invariably” supports the central role of ASEAN’s 10 member states in regional affairs, noting that their ties have acquired a “fundamentally new quality” over the past years.

“Cooperation in the field of politics and security, countering new challenges and threats is strengthening. Cooperation in the fields of economics, energy, agriculture, and humanitarian ties has gained positive momentum,” he added.

The diplomat said Moscow proceeds from the fact that this meeting will contribute to further uncovering the potential in Russia-ASEAN dialogue, and that the adoption of the Russia-ASEAN program document for 2026-2030 is intended to facilitate the solution to problems by proposing to set forth current goals and priority areas of cooperation.

Lavrov arrived in the Malaysian capital earlier Thursday as part of a visit to attend ASEAN’s annual ministerial events, including foreign ministers’ meetings in the format of the East Asia Summit and the ASEAN Regional Forum on security.

He also held talks with his Chinese, Laotian, Malaysian, and Sri Lankan counterparts on the sidelines.

  • Gaza death toll nears 57,800 as Israel continues genocidal war on Palestinians

ISTANBUL – At least 57,762 Palestinians have been killed in Israel’s genocidal war on the Gaza Strip since October 2023, the Health Ministry said on Thursday.

A ministry statement said that 82 bodies were brought to hospitals in the last 24 hours, while 247 people were injured, bringing the number of injuries in the Israeli onslaught to 137,656.

“Many victims are still trapped under the rubble and on the roads, with rescuers unable to reach them,” it added.

The ministry noted that nine Palestinians were killed and over 78 injured while trying to get humanitarian aid in the last 24 hours, bringing the total number of aid seekers killed by Israeli fire since May 27 to 782 and 5,179 others wounded.

  • At least 28 killed, dozens injured in pre-dawn Israeli strikes across Gaza Strip

GAZA CITY, Palestine / ISTANBUL – At least 28 civilians were killed and dozens injured in Thursday pre-dawn Israeli strikes in the Gaza Strip, according to medical sources.

The Israeli army targeted a group of civilians waiting near a medical care site for food supplement delivery in Deir al-Balah, killing 13, most of them women and children, and seriously injuring others, a medical source told Anadolu.

Separately, four people from the same family were killed in an Israeli strike targeting their home in the Bureij refugee camp in the central Gaza Strip.

Two Palestinians were also killed and 10 injured in Israeli drone strikes in the Nuseirat refugee camp.

In the southern Gaza Strip, the Israeli army killed five people, including two children, and injured 20 others in strikes on tents sheltering displaced Palestinians in the Al-Mawasi area of Khan Younis.

A mother and three of her children were also killed when the Israeli army struck their home in Khan Younis. More than 20 people were injured in the same attack.

  • Russia’s attack on Kyiv kills two as US resumes arms deliveries to Ukraine

KYIV, July 10 – Russian drones and missiles bore down on the Ukrainian capital of Kyiv early on Thursday, with officials reporting two deaths, 13 injured and fires in apartment and non-residential buildings as Washington resumed weapons delivery to the war-torn country.

It was also the latest in Russia’s escalating attacks with hundreds of drones and missiles straining Ukrainian air defences at a perilous moment in the war and forcing thousands of people to frequently seek bomb shelters overnight.

“Residential buildings, vehicles, warehouse facilities, office and non-residential buildings are on fire,” head of Kyiv’s military administration, Tymur Tkachenko, said on the Telegram messaging app.

The full scale of the attack was not immediately clear. There was no comment from Moscow about the attack that came a day after Russia launched a single-night record number of drones targeting its smaller neighbour.

After U.S. President Donald Trump pledged earlier this week to send more defensive weapons to Kyiv, Washington was already delivering artillery shells and mobile rocket artillery missiles to Ukraine, two U.S. officials told Reuters on Wednesday.

  • Flash flooding that killed 3 leaves New Mexico village heartbroken, anxious as cleanup begins

In this photo provided by Barbara Arthur, damage from flash flooding with mud and debris is seen outside a house at the Riverside RV Park, Wednesday, July 9, 2025, in Ruidoso, N.M. AP

RUIDOSO, N.M. – Broken tree limbs, twisted metal, crumpled cars and muddy debris remained Wednesday as crews worked to clear roads and culverts in the wake of a flash flood that descended upon the New Mexico mountain community of Ruidoso, killing three people and damaging dozens of homes.

An intense bout of monsoon rains set the disaster in motion Tuesday. Water rushed from the surrounding mountainside, overwhelming the Rio Ruidoso and taking with it a man and two children from an RV park along the river. The bodies were found downstream during search and rescue efforts.

The children — a 4-year-old girl and a 7-year-old boy — had been camping with their parents when they were swept away. The father and mother were being treated for injuries sustained in the flooding at a hospital in Texas, according to officials at Fort Bliss, where the father is stationed.

Mayor Lynn Crawford said hearts are broken over the lives lost and stomachs are in knots as residents begin to take stock of the damage.

A popular summer retreat, Ruidoso is no stranger to tragedy. It has spent a year rebuilding following destructive wildfires last summer and the flooding that followed.

Tuesday’s rainfall was more than could be absorbed by the hillsides and canyons within the burn scar.

At the Riverside RV Park, owner Barbara Arthur and her guests scrambled up a nearby slope when the river started coursing through the site Tuesday afternoon. It was the sixth time the river rose in the last several weeks and by far the worst, she said.

Arthur’s house was destroyed along with a nearby rental house she owns, and the water floated three trailers in the RV park. It was more destruction than she suffered from flooding last year, and possibly more than she can recover from, she said.

“We’re just trying to recover from last year and man here we go again,” she said. “It’s going to be a long road, and I have no doubt that, you know, everybody’s going to pull together and get it done. But I may not be one of them.”

    Setting records

Officials urged residents to seek higher ground as the Rio Ruidoso rose to more than 20 feet (6 meters), according to preliminary data recorded by a U.S. Geological Survey gauge. That was nearly 5 feet (1.52 meters) more than the previous high the year before.

The National Weather Service issued flood warnings throughout Tuesday, with an upgraded emergency notification coming at 2:47 p.m. Most of the precipitation fell sometime between about 2:30 and 4 p.m.

“We received three and a half inches of rain on the South Fork burn scar in about a 90-minute period. That water came directly into our community and impacted the community head on,” Mayor Crawford said during a news conference.

As little as a quarter of an inch of rain over a burn scar can cause flooding.

“So they were probably already getting some runoff from upstream before it even actually started raining on top of the wildfire burn scar,” said Todd Shoemake, a meteorologist for the weather service in Albuquerque. “It really was just kind of a terrible coincidence of events that led to that.”

The amount of rainfall wasn’t necessarily historical, Shoemake said, but he likened it to a 100-year storm, or having a 1% chance of happening in any given year.

    Cleanup begins

Emergency crews completed dozens of swift water rescues before the water receded Tuesday. Two National Guard teams and several local crews already were in the area when the flooding began, said Danielle Silva of the New Mexico Department of Homeland Security and Emergency Management.

Several roads remained closed Wednesday and the mayor said it would take time to restore utilities in some neighborhoods. The floodwaters fractured village water lines, infiltrated the sewer system and significantly damaged as many as 50 homes, with one home carried away entirely.

Along the river, pieces of metal were wrapped around trees while broken branches were wedged against homes and twisted among the Ponderosa pines that were still standing along the banks. The river — just a trickle compared to the day before — was thick with sediment.

Shelters were open Wednesday and food banks doled out provisions, as village officials encouraged people to call an emergency line if their loved ones or neighbors were missing or affected by the flood.

The floods came just days after flash floods in Texas killed more than 100 people and left more than 160 people missing.

  • Israeli soldier killed in S. Gaza clashes

GAZA/JERUSALEM, July 9 – Al-Qassam Brigades, the armed wing of Hamas, said on Wednesday that it killed an Israeli soldier during clashes in Khan Younis, southern Gaza Strip.

The incident occurred in the Abasan al-Kabira area, east of Khan Younis, as Hamas fighters attacked a gathering of Israeli soldiers and vehicles, targeting a tank and an armored personnel carrier with missiles, the brigades said in a press statement.

The brigades added that its members targeted two military excavators, and engaged with Israeli soldiers, noting that the field conditions did not permit them to capture one of the soldiers, so they killed him and took his weapon.

Meanwhile, the Israeli military confirmed in a statement that Palestinian militants in Gaza killed a soldier during an attempted “abduction.”

An initial investigation indicated that during an assault in Khan Younis, militants emerged from an underground tunnel and attacked Israeli troops, said the statement.

Security forces in the area opened fire at the militants, hitting several of them and thwarting the abduction attempt, the military added.

This was the 889th Israeli soldier killed since October 2023, when Israel launched its assault on Gaza following a Hamas-led surprise attack that killed about 1,200 people and saw 250 taken hostage.
